Maro is an early-stage startup operating in the B2C(Business to Consumer) space aiming to address the current youth mental health crisis through expert-focused parenting advice, behavioral tracking and community.

Initial Task

Design an intuitive mobile app that empowers parents to support their child's mental health by providing expert resources, behavior tracking tools, and access to pediatricians. The app should build trust with parents while meeting key business objectives.

Confronting the Crisis: 80% of Kids with Mental Illness Lack Proper Care

  • 1 in 5 children face a diagnosable mental illness, 80% lack adequate care.

  • Parents rely on basic tools like Apple Notes to track behavior after ages 3-4.

  • Collecting tracking data is essential for the client's business model

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

I worked on this project as Product Designer and Facilitator

Main areas of responsibility:
- Management (Communication with stake holders and schedule structure)
- UX Research (3 interviews conducted, Dovetail tagging)
- Design (information architecture, structure of app, copy and onboarding)
- Lo-fi prototyping (flow and interactions)

Key Takeaways

  • Business goals and metrics should inform UX design priorities.

  • Being decisive is crucial, Our full redesign scope was overly ambitious.

  • Smooth collaboration was integral in high-pressure ideation. Respecting perspectives avoids frustration.

  • Prioritized record-keeping is essential for successful knowledge transfer to the appropriate stakeholders.

Conclusion

Designing an app to support children's mental health is a complex challenge, but our user-centered approach uncovered key opportunities to empower parents and meet critical business goals. The result was an intuitive, trustworthy product that's well-positioned for growth.
